Under the Section 199A tax code, not all businesses are treated equally. While general trades and manufacturers can claim the 20% Qualified Business Income (QBI) deduction regardless of how much profit they earn (provided they pay W-2 wages), businesses classified as a Specified Service Trade or Business (SSTB) face aggressive statutory phase-outs.

If your business is classified as an SSTB and your 2026 taxable income exceeds $276,750 (Single) or $553,500 (Married Filing Jointly), your QBI deduction drops to exactly $0.

The SSTB Phase-Out Calculation

If your business is an SSTB and your taxable income falls inside the 2026 phase-in window ($201,750 to $276,750 for Single filers), your QBI deduction is calculated using a linear reduction ratio:

  1. Phase-In Ratio: (Taxable Income − $201,750) ÷ $75,000
  2. Allowable Percentage: 100% − Phase-In Ratio
  3. Your QBI net profit and W-2 wages are multiplied by this allowable percentage before running the standard 20% calculation.
